Lawyers demand solution to VAT problems
A SPECIAL meeting of the Taxation Young Lawyers Association was held under the chairmanship of its president Jatinder Khurana, to discuss problems related to Value Added Tax (VAT) in Punjab.
Khurana said that even after eight months of the date of implementation of VAT there is no decrease in problems being faced by traders and taxation advocates. He said that interruption in computer system causes delay in issuing of VAT registration number and non-release of refunds. Also, amendments in registration of traders and industrialists are not being made although they have furnished information of change of their business.
Khurana added that government had given assurance that Central Sales Tax will be nullified before the implementation of VAT, but it has now been forgotten. He opposed the proposal of turnover tax.
Chairman Sachin Mahendru and joint secretary Ajay Kaushal said that on account of non-submission of returns by the traders, officials are imposing high penalty. They also impound transport vehicles unnecessarily at barriers even if they carry complete documents.
