VAT off food items in the New Year
THE removal of Value Added Tax on six basic food items and kerosene is to take effect from Sunday, the first day of the New Year.
The items that will be VAT-free are flour and sharp, tea, tinned fish, edible oils, powered milk, rice and kerosene.
Price and Incomes Board official Biulailai Biutiviti confirmed this yesterday and added that the retail price for flour and sharp should decrease from 90cents to 80cents per kilogram in all major trading centres in the country.
“A 10kg pre-pack bag reduces from $8.86 to $7.87, a 100g packet of Punjas Ceylon Tea reduces from 92cents to 82cents and a 100g packet of Bushells Tea reduces from $1.10 to 98c per packet,” Mr Biutiviti said.
“A 425g tin of Angel Red canned fish is to reduce from $1.63 to $1.45, a tin of Sunbell Tuna reduces from $1.10 to 98c per tin, a 425g tin of Angel or Ocean Gold tinned fish reduces from $1.72 to $1.62 per tin.”
In addition to this, the board confirmed that the price for a 10kg bag of Calrose rice reduces to $11.94 from $13.43 to $11.94 and a kg of long grain rice should be reduced from $1.18 to $1.05.
